Only 80 miles away from Hawkes Bay in the North Island of New Zealand. Having vines planted here since the 1800's after settlers thought they were in Hawkes Bay, but only since the 1920's has this region taken off commercially.
White aromatic styles are predominately grown here, Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewurtztraminer, and Chenin Blanc. Red styles are also grown and these are Merlot, Malbec and Syrah - these vines love the warm growing season which is prolonged and influenced by the coastal breezes which moderate the intense heat from the region and give the grapes great acidity and complexity.
Some sparkling styles are now also made here.
