Although not being awarded its DO status until 1982 the history of this region dates back to 1864. Now having this status regulations ensure that red wines must have a minimum of 75% Tempranillo, the rest of the blend is usually made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Malbec. Up to 5% of this can also be Albilo or Garnacha.
Garnacha is also used in most rose wines.
In 2019 white wines were also put into the legislation.
