The province of Burgos lies within the Castilla y Leon region and it is here, at an altitude of about 830 metres, that the village of Gumiel de Mercado gives rise to the highly-regarded wines of Bodegas Arrocal. This ancient medieval village is a privileged place within the D.O. Ribera del Duero boasting a long and proud winemaking tradition. At its centre, there is a hill under which the ancestors of the current owners of Arrocal, Rosa Arroyo and Moises Calvo (hence together – Arrocal!), painstakingly excavated impressive underground cellars in order to elaborate and preserve their treasured wines. Today, with the help of their two sons Rodrigo and Asier, the family continues to make handcrafted
Ribera wines from the Tempranillo grape locally called Tinta Fina. Their sustainably tended 50 hectares of vineyards are the cradle of a range of wines that captures perfectly the individual style and pedigree of high-quality Ribera del Duero wines. Their new winery was completed in 2003, brilliantly equipped with the latest technical advances, thus ensuring that the harvest is handled with the utmost care. This is home to 600 oak barrels, the majority of which are French.
From a medium-bodied Joven right through to full-bodied Reserva wines, the distinctive Arrocal freshness is the ever present and telling signature.
